What do I need to do before I can start driving?

You need to be at least 17 years of age and if you have not already done so, apply for a provisional license from the DVLA. You can apply for your first provisional driving licence from DVLA online. Apply using your Government Gateway ID. If you don’t have one or need to re-register, you’ll get an ID as part of your application. Alternatively Pick up a D1 form from your local Post Office. It is also worth having an eyesight check, but in any event, ensure you can read a standard car number plate at 20.5 metres.

How much are driving lessons with Select Driver Training?

Our Driving Instructors standard charge is £40 per hr for regular manual tuition with an option of a pre-paid 10hr block booking of £380 - there are regional variations, please contact us for accurate pricing for your area.

All Instructors accept payment via Bank Transfer or Cash.

How often should I have tuition?

Continuity of driving lessons is important and Select recommends that you have between 1.5 and 4 hours per week. You will also progress much quicker if you have two hour lessons each time subject to Instructor availability.

How many driving lessons will I need to take?

The number of lessons required varies from student to student and is dependent on many factors, such as age, availability and learning style. Your instructor will, however, monitor your progress and keep you fully informed.

Do Select offer intensive driving courses? - Currently not running due to high volume of regular pupils

Yes we do offer intensive driving courses. These can be anything from one week upwards. Undertaking an intensive course will depend on several factors, such as previous experience and whether you have passed your theory test and are subject to Instructor availability.

Do I need to pass the Theory Test before I can start my driving lessons?

No, and in fact it may be better to learn the theory whilst having practical lessons. You will however need to pass the theory test before applying for the practical test.

What type of car will I be learning in?

We have a range of modern cars which all come with dual controls for your peace of mind and safety.​

How long does the practical driving test last? 
The practical driving test lasts approximately 40 minutes.

What are the Show Me Tell Me questions?
Before your Driving Test starts, the Examiner will ask you 1 question and also 1 question whilst you are driving. 1 ‘Tell Me’ question on car safety and maintenance which will require an explanation and 1 ‘Show Me’ question that will require physically checking something.

Are there any Driving Test waiting times?
Yes It varies throughout the year and from Centre to Centre

Can I be picked up and dropped off in a different place?
Yes, with enough notice this is easily arranged. Lessons are conducted on a one to one basis with no car sharing. Pupils are collected from home, college or work place.

Which car will I take my practical driving test in? 
You will normally use your current Driving Instructors car as this will be most familiar to you unless you also drive your own car and feel more comfortable using it. To do this your car must be in a road worthy condition, have L-plates visible from the front and back of the car and a further interior mirror for the examiner’s use.

How long is each lesson?
Lessons are generally 1½ or 2 hours in duration. Most pupils tend to prefer 1½ or 2 hour lessons as 1 hour isn’t quite enough and greater progress can be made.

What happens if I don't like my instructor?

We have a team of instructors with varying ages and personalities. At Select we try and find the right instructor for you. If you're not happy, simply give us a call and we'll do our best to find you another instructor.
